Additionally Sesamin has been shown to increase ketone production while on a reduced or low carb diet. Ketogenesis is crucial during low carb diets because the brain cannot use fatty acids for fuel, it can only use glucose. When glucose is low, the brain will turn to ketones for its energy, so the increase in production will keep your natural energy levels up and also have a protein-sparing effect as less amino acids will be needed to create ketones. This means your muscle mass will be spared while dieting.
Intro: A Japanese study found that sesamin increases the activity of several liver enzymes that break down fatty acids. By optimizing the liver’s fat-burning capacity, sesamin may promote fat loss and also decrease the body’s fat storage capacity. Additionally, sesamin is believed to help preserve lean muscle mass, which is particularly beneficial when dieting (especially for those who have cut out carbohydrates), as a restricted diet may cause the body to break down muscle mass for use as fuel.

Body Text: Subjects consumed experimental diets containing various percentages of sesamin for 15 days. Dietary sesamin dose-dependently increased both mitochondrial and peroxisomal palmitoyl-coenzyme A (CoA) oxidation rates. Mitochondrial activity almost doubled in subjects on the 0.5% sesamin diet. Peroxisomal activity increased more than 10-fold in subjects fed a 0.5% sesamin diet in relation to subjects on the sesamin-free diet. Dietary sesamin greatly increased the livers rate of fatty acid burning enzymes. Sesamin-induced increases in the activity and gene expression of carnitine palmitoyltransferase (necessary to transport fatty acids into the mitochondria to be burned as energy) were also observed.

Conclusion: Sesamin strongly activates PPAR-alpha, and increase mitochondrial and peroxisome activity – this increases fatty acid metabolism significantly. Also, Sesamin increases the expression of a mitochondrial enzyme known as carnitine palmitoyl transferase. Carnitine palmitoyl tranferase is an enyme that shuttles fatty acids to the mitochondria, making more fatty acids available for use as energy.
The fat-fighting ingredients in hops are called isohumulones, which contribute to beer’s bitter flavor. New research reports isomerized hops extract can decrease body fat by several mechanisms: First, it inhibits the absorption of fat by the intestines. Second, it activates genes involved in fat oxidation to ramp up the fat-burning engines. And third, it decreases the activity of genes that control the synthesis and storage of bodyfat.
A 2005 study found that hops extract prevented weight gain when a high-fat diet was consumed. Two sets of mice were fed a standard or high-fat diet containing isomerized hop extract (IHE). Their body and tissue weights were measured at various points. The mice fed the high-fat diet with IHE showed a reduced body weight gain and improved glucose tolerance. The researchers concluded that IHE may also be helpful in humans when it comes to preventing diet-induced obesity.

Fucoxanthin increases the amount of energy released as heat in fat tissue, a process also called thermogenesis. Fucoxanthin affects multiple enzymes involved in fat metabolism, causing an increase in the production of energy from fat. The primary benefit of a fucoxanthin supplement is fat loss. This particular weight loss aid takes time to go into effect as it is non-stimulatory and must build up in your fat tissue first before inducing fat loss.

Fucoxanthin also directly contributes to the reduction of visceral fat in humans. The researchers believe that the UCP1 Gene stimulates the metabolism of fatty acids inside of the white adipose tissue and thereby speeds their oxidation. This metabolic process results in burning the visceral fat tissue
GRAINS OF PARADISE EXTRACT
Grains of Paradise has the rare ability to activate brown adipose tissue, whose primary function is to generate heat, which it does by burning white adipose tissue.
A 2013 study published in the “British Journal of Nutrition” tested the effects of Grains of Paradise extract (including several bioactives such as 6-gingerol and 6-paradol) on Brown Adipose Tissue (induced by cold exposure therapy) in healthy human subjects. In this particular study, 12 of the 19 volunteers were determined to have significant Brown Adipose Tissue while 7 were not. All subjects were given Grains of Paradise extract and underwent cold exposure therapy. Subjects with significant amounts of Brown Adipose Tissue experienced an increase in metabolic rate in response to cold exposure, while the subjects without significant Brown Adipose Tissue experienced no such increase.
These results indicate that Grains of Paradise extract, at a dose of 40mg (the same amount as found in a serving of Magnum After Burner®), can increase metabolic rate by the activation of Brown Adipose Tissue in combination with a stressor such as cold therapy or calorie restriction as speculated by researchers.
Although Grains of Paradise has a well-documented history of use in traditional medicine, and has a variety of potential health benefits, scientists have only recently begun exploring its potential as a weight-loss agent. The preliminary research that has been conducted thus far indicates that Grains of Paradise has a particularly rare ability to activate Brown Adipose Tissue in humans.
Oleoylethanolamide (OEA) acts on a receptor called Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor Alpha (PPARα). When this receptor is activated it decreases hunger and creates a feeling of fullness. Studies report that OEA can turn off the switch in the central nervous system for hunger. When you eat food, OEA levels increase and your appetite decreases when the sensory nerves that link to your brain tell it that you’re full. In 2004, Danish researchers looked at rats that had been starved for 24 hours. They administered OEA (10 mg/kg of body weight) and found that food intake was reduced by 15.5 percent. Additionally, a 2009 study at the University of California reported that OEA also affects memory-enhancing signals in the part of the brain that remembers emotional events. The researchers said that when placed in a maze, the OEA helped animals remember where they found a nice, fatty meal. This memory trigger is believed to be a key aspect in human’s earlier primitive lifestyle but also hypothesizes that fatty foods could help in the formation of long-term memories.
OEA may also be able to aid fat loss by acting on PPARα. When this receptor is activated in fat tissue, energy expenditure increases. Activation can be caused via oral consumption of OEA.
Piperine increases the absorption and effectiveness of all nutrients by increasing the blood supply to the GI tract, increasing the emulsifying content of the gut. It aslo increases our active nutrient transport, thus facilitating nutrient absorption.
Piperine also has been shown to counter the negative effects of a high fat diet. Scientists from Annamalai University in India (Vijiyakumar. 2006) investigated the effect of black pepper extract on hormonal and apo lipoprotein profiles in hyperlipidemic rats and found:
