Feeling Dizzy or Fatigued? Try these recipes to get hydrated

Feeling dizzy or fatigued? You may be dehydrated. Feeling parched? Don’t ignore it. Thirst is the first sign that you’re already dehydrated. We’ve all heard we should aim to drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day. But when water becomes a bore let these sippers come to the rescue.

Sparkling apple cider also works well. If you prefer your drinks less sweet, cut the mixture with fizzy water. Serves 8.

  • 2 cups light agave nectar
  • 1 6-inch piece fresh ginger,
  • peeled and finely chopped
  • 2 cups water
  • 6 cups sparkling pear cider
  • Ice cubes
  • 8 slices crystallized ginger
  • 8 cinnamon sticks, 4 inches each

1 Place agave, ginger, and water in a medium saucepan; bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and cook about 1 hour, until ginger favor is quite strong. Let cool; refrigerate overnight. Strain before using. (Makes 2 cups ginger syrup. Store in an airtight container, refrigerated, up to one week.)

In a large pitcher, combine up to 1 cup ginger syrup with sparkling cider. Fill eight tall glasses with ice cubes; top with cider mixture. Cut a small slit in each piece of crystallized ginger and affix to each glass rim. Garnish with cinnamon sticks and serve immediately.

PER SERVING: 204 cal, 0g fat, 0mg chol, 51g carb (0g fiber), 2mg sodium, 1g protein

Double or triple this amount and take it to the beach or on a hike for a hydrating treat. Makes 2 cups.

  • ½ cup of cherry juice
  • 1 ¼ cups of plain or mineral water
  • ¼ cup of orange juice

1 Mix all ingredients. Serve over ice.

How much should you drink?

To determine how much liquid you need on an average day divide your weight in pounds in half to get your daily ounces requirement. For instance, if you weigh 140 pounds, you need to drink 70 ounces of water a day. There are 8 ounces in a cup, so you need to drink between eight and nine cups of water daily. If you’re planning to be active or spend time in the sun, drink 20 ounces 3 to 4 hours before heading out.
