Great Supplements for Fall & Winter

Great Supplements for Fall & Winter

, by Dr. Jeff Pearl, MD, 3 min reading time

As you're preparing for Winter, even in Arizona, here's some new supplements to consider and some important ones to revisit. Hope these few tips help you have a healthy and happy holiday season.

Turmeric

One of my favorite supplements and one that I have mentioned before is Turmeric which contains the active ingredient Curcurmin. This is found in traditional curry based sauces and food, or in pill form as a supplement. Curcurmin has been shown to be beneficial in promoting a healthy inflammation response and support joint health.

In some studies, as well as in my own personal experience, Turmeric works as well or better than ibuprofen or Advil. Furthermore where anti-inflammatories such as Ibuprofen have a tendency cause stomach discomfort, Tumeric is also use as a digestive aid and calms the stomach. In my own personal experience Tumeric which can be taken as one pill a day is as helpful if not more, than Advil for my own joint discomfort. Numerous other conditions have been linked to the use of Curcurmin dating back 4000 years. Turmeric as an antioxidant is thought to protect the brain and support natural aging.

Probiotics for Winter

Another area that’s been discussed before but deserves mentioning again is the use of probiotics in the diet, especially in winter. We all know that probiotics protect the G.I. tract and due to the fact most of us tend to challenge our stomachs during the holiday season, keeping health intestinal flora can go a long way in making your holiday season more comfortable. Keeping good intestinal flora may just help you avoid some of the G.I. distress that inevitably comes with overeating during the holiday season.

Furthermore the G.I. tract is really a passage way to the body and the health of our intestine and are G.I. tract is very important to the overall function of the immune system and overall health. In other words, protecting your intestines and maintaining normal and healthy flora can help protect you from catching a cold. One study demonstrated that daily supplementation actually reduce both the incidence and duration of the common cold.

Helpful Hint: A probiotic that has at least 1 million active bacteria per serving, not just when purchased but guaranteed to have that prior to its expiration date is optimal.
