Antioxidants may slow the aging process by protecting cells from damage. As a result, foods and supplements with antioxidant properties are often referred to as anti-aging. Of course, nothing can completely reverse aging, but antioxidants may be able to reduce the skin and cell damage that is caused by sun exposure, environmental pollution, and stress. Anti-oxidants may also help protect cells from degenerative diseases such as cancer, heart disease and autoimmune conditions.
Vitamins and minerals have antioxidant properties, as do a variety of plant extracts, super fruits, red wine, spices, nutrients and other substances. However, in order to get therapeutic levels of antioxidant rich foods it is often necessary to eat large amounts of fruits and vegetables which many people don't do. In addition, although a daily glass of red wine is healthy as it provides the antioxidant resveratrol, any more than 1-2 drinks per day can lead to the consumption of too many calories and an unhealthy intake of alcohol.
